Dahlonega

Anna

In Dahlonega we learned that a guy named Benjamin Parks went out in the woods hunting and he stubbed his toe on a rock but it was actually gold and that’s how it all started. At the museum there were many things about gold.  There was a machine that crushed the gold and it was called a stamp mill. There is some gold in Fulton County but not much, there is more in north Fulton. I also learned that there was a water hose that had really strong water that made big dents in the rocks and it tore down a lot of trees. In the mine I learned that if they said "fire in the hole" that means run and there was a little hiding spot were they went when a the fire ball went by them. I also learned that in the mine that there was a wishing rock and it was called that because people hit their head a lot on it so they wish they hadn’t. The mine was also under the water table. At the end of the trip we went gold panning and I found two pieces! I really liked learning about the parts of the mine that were old. I liked the guide because he was really funny. I also liked the museum because it was really well laid out.

Cloudland Canyon

Anna

We went to Cloudland Canyon this week and I saw a really pretty waterfall, the upper waterfall. I also saw the lower waterfall, which was also really pretty. I also saw the trees, which have many different colors, which were also really pretty. I learned that there were different types of rocks. I also learned that the rock overhang formed itself by water. I also learned that Cloudland Canyon has been around for a long time. At Cloudland Canyon we fimled a vocabulary movie where me, and Teresa were partners, we had a rubber snake and Mr. Childs was the clown. I thought it was really pretty at Cloudland Canyon.  Here is a poem about the canyon wall:

The wall connects to my life by
Seeing things from different
Perspectives
It’s like your start to life
Its long
Its gray
It has greenery around it
There are lots of trees
It’s big
I took lots of pictures of it
I took pictures of it
From different
Angles
It has different
Colors of
Greenery

Arabia Mountain - 10/12/12

Last week we went to Arabia Mountain and we had to write 3 different poems in different ways.  We also had to take pictures that were on a list like the frog pond and many other things. We had to check off the pictures as we took them. We hiked down and up, some of the mountain was kind of steep and it was really fun. After we wrote the poems we had to measure a weathering pit with Mr. Childs we had to have partners of two so Amanda and me were partners. One person had to hold one end of the measuring tape while the other had to hold the other end. We had to measure from end to end and also we had to measure from the middle and then we had to record what we found out. Then we had to stick a pencil into the dirt where the biggest and tallest plant was and we had too see how deep the soil was. Some differences between Arabia Mountain and Stone Mountain are that Stone Mountain has less plants than Arabia Mountain. Stone mountain is bigger than Arabia Mountain. Some similarities are that they are both made of granite and they both have weathering pits.
